Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the institutional framework and policies that advocate the creation of green ports in order to achieve sustainability. Initially, the terms green ports, governance framework, green port development policies will be clarified, while at the same time practices and technologies that promote environmental sustainability, which aims to minimize ecological impacts globally, will be identified. Given the constant traffic of ports to meet the needs of international trade, urgent needs arise for their expansion and regeneration, while inductively as a result of the above, various environmental issues are presented, which will be highlighted and discussed in the context of the adopted strategies for their resolution.As a consequence, the governance framework and policies used for the sustainable development of ports will be identified on issues related to energy efficiency, emission reduction, waste management, and protection of natural resources and the issues presented in the effort to adopt a unified policy oriented towards sustainability and sustainability will be identified. such as the lack of coherent environmental responsibility and consistency, the incomplete legislative framework and the available financial incentives.Then, the practices and regulatory framework for addressing the mentioned issues will be identified, as determined through compliance with international environmental regulations compatible with standards that contribute to the proper utilization of resources, based on incentives for international collaborations between stakeholders, in order to set the conditions for the adoption of proposed policies to achieve the goals of states for the creation of green ports.Finally, a review of the international literature will be carried out to highlight and analyse successful case studies of European green ports that are considered as role models, demonstrating commitments to balance economic growth and environmental responsibility, through compliance with the wider sustainability goals of the European Union, thanks to their focus on reducing environmental impact, improving energy efficiency and adopting friendly ones. to the environment, technologies.
