In recent years, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has increasingly captured a larger share of the global market. This market is expanding rapidly in maritime energy transport. Greece has been one of the pioneers in the use of LNG in Europe, with the number of ships meeting LNG combustion specifications continuously increasing.
However, this fuel raises various concerns regarding environmental issues. Although it is considered a more environmentally beneficial alternative to oil, it still poses its own set of risks.
This paper investigates the environmental and economic impacts of liquefied natural gas. Initially, an introduction to the concept of natural and liquefied natural gas is provided, highlighting key aspects such as its history, primary uses, and production process.
Next, an analysis of the LNG market is presented, focusing on exports in the years 2022 and 2023, the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on its supply and demand, as well as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This chapter also features an overview of the Revithoussa terminal, a critical reference point for the Greek LNG market.
Subsequently, both the benefits and the impacts of LNG on environmental and economic levels are discussed. Particular attention is given to the implications of LNG transportation methods.
Finally, the paper concludes with the key findings, emphasizing the main points.
