The main topic of this thesis is innovation in family businesses. Family firms are the first and main form of business formation, and constitute the vast majority of firms around the world and especially the Greek reality. The advantages of family businesses make them better able to cope with difficult periods of recession and stagnation, to absorb economic shocks more effectively. However, the influence of the family and the family nature of these businesses make this business formation particularly complex, especially when it comes to innovation.
The first four chapters of the paper attempt a literature review of the topic. In the first chapter an extensive review of the literature on entrepreneurship and its various theories and forms is presented. In addition, the factors that influence entrepreneurship and the motivations for undertaking it are examined. In the second chapter, a definition of family businesses is given and their characteristics are analysed, with an emphasis on advantages, disadvantages and succession issues.
The third chapter focuses on the definition of innovation as a mechanism for achieving competitive advantage, describing the forms of innovation, its sources of development, as well as the barriers it faces (internal and external). In addition, the benefits of innovation are analysed and data on the development of innovation in the Greek reality are provided.
In the fourth chapter of the theoretical part, the paper attempts to link Greek family businesses and innovation by posing concerns and questions around the issue, which will be attempted to be answered through the sample survey. In the second research part of the paper, the relationship between Greek family firms and innovation is specifically examined through questionnaires addressed to Greek family firms. The profile of the participating firms, their financial data and their perception of innovation are analysed. The paper is summarized with an analysis of the survey results, observations and suggestions for improvement.
