Abstract

Contemporary research and studies confirm that climate change, primarily driven by anthropogenic causes, is undeniable and is accelerating at alarming rates, creating irreversible conditions. One of the human activities contributing significantly to the exacerbation of the problem is agriculture, as the continuously increasing production has led to particularly burdensome environmental conditions such as water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, soil erosion, and soil contamination with chemicals. Therefore, the agricultural sector is called upon to redefine its farming practices with a more environmentally friendly approach, based on the goals of Sustainable Development. Two innovative agricultural models aimed at sustainability through the rational use of inputs and natural resources, while simultaneously increasing yields and profitability, are Precision Agriculture and the Circular Economy models. This specific research studies the feasibility of applying Precision Agriculture techniques and Circular Economy models by the Agricultural Cooperative of Zagora Pilion "ZAGORIN," through highlighting the attitudes and opinions of the cooperative members using questionnaires and interviews. Data were collected from 434 farmers who answered the questionnaire and from interviews with four members of the cooperative's administration. The results show that the farmers of the Agricultural Cooperative of Zagora face the impacts of climate change daily, leading them to acknowledge the necessity of transitioning to more sustainable agriculture. However, despite their concerns and awareness, their level of knowledge regarding the concepts of Precision Agriculture and the Circular Economy is quite low. On the contrary, the level of knowledge of the individuals in the cooperative's administration, who hold significant roles in its organization and operation, is quite high, as evidenced by the cooperative's continuous efforts to evolve and adopt innovative practices aimed at sustainability and technological and economic development. The first part of the study attempts a presentation of the literature review of the concepts, while the second part presents and analyzes the results of the quantitative and qualitative research.
