The interconnection between public health and sustainability represents a critical and growing concern for modern societies, particularly in light of the challenges posed by global health crises and environmental degradation. As the transition towards sustainability involves complex and multi-dimensional processes, the strategic alignment of health policies with sustainability goals remains a pressing issue.
This thesis explores the relationship between public health and sustainability within the framework of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, with a particular focus on SDG 3: "Good Health and Well-being." The aim of this thesis is to examinate the formulation and evaluate the institutional framework policies as well as the strategic approaches that shape the public health landscape, particularly in Greece, and their ability to contribute to sustainable development. The analysis includes a detailed review of existing literature and policy documents at the global, European, and national levels and highlights how the resilience and sustainability of the Greek public health system can be strengthened through strategic planning and policy integration, with lessons drawn from both national and international experiences. Finally, the thesis provides recommendations for improving the sustainability of public health systems, emphasizing the need for enhanced governance, the adoption of innovative approaches, and the alignment of health initiatives with broader sustainability agendas.
