This dissertation examines the possible pathways, existing tools, future scenarios as well as barriers existing in the journey of the shipping sector to achieve what International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set as targets by 2050 and examines the role of ports in reaching the goals that have been set from the various regulatory bodies. Through comprehensive review of current literature, case studies and reports, we examine the various existing measures that have been planned for the decarbonization of ports and their role to a more sustainable environment succeeding the regulatory targets set but also the need for sustainable growth of the ports for the community. Additionally, this thesis examines specifically the readiness of U.S ports providing a brief discussion on the various initiatives that have been already or are under discussion for three main ports of U.S. This thesis provides also the potential benefit and challenges that are arising from the complexity and different features of the Ports.
