A growing number of cities are switching to bike sharing systems as a fast, economically efficient and greener extension to public transport, by providing last-mile transportation services. The modern version of bike sharing systems consist of freely distributed bicycles. Under this framework, companies that provide their services on this sector must deal with asymmetrical bike distribution, compliance with state rules, keeping a steady service level throughout a bike’s lifecycle and finally the withdrawal of a bike when it cannot function up to certain standards. In this thesis, we focus on the recycling of bikes, given the asymmetrical spatial distribution that occurs from the underlining business framework. Up to now, service providers have a rather
negative attitude towards dealing with bike recycling. This affects the quality of service in such a way that unavailability of bikes is not something uncommon. The root cause of the above-mentioned behavior is the fact that until now, recycling frameworks do not address spatial asymmetric distribution. A solid proposal to achieve a quicker recycling process would be the incentivization of people who have time, are willing to provide and have the proper vehicle to assist the first phase of the process. That is to gather bikes in small batches from various sites and after this phase, provider’s trucks can gather bikes from predetermined spots and finalize the process. A direct issue to be faced in this extension, would be the pricing policy of those incentives. For this, we propose a unified framework for the recycling process that includes the following. A pricing policy for the provided incentives that will dynamically change according to user interaction.
It also includes a task management system that fits the crowdsourcing model of actions that can be accomplished, plus a process to be followed by company trucks for the last phase of recycling process.
