The Covid-19 pandemic has forcefully shown the importance of digitalization and new technologies within the maritime industry. The Shipping sector in an attempt to continue inspecting, auditing and surveying the condition of the global fleet, during the era of social and transportation restriction, where on board visit was impossible, induced the idea of remote attendances to satisfy industry needs and comply with statutory requirements. The IACS association immediately promoted the deployment of remote surveys to ensure the sector would continue functioning in as smooth and efficient manner as possible. The most important achievements of remote survey are that they have globally succeeded in minimizing the exposure of seafarers and shore-based personnel to SARS-CoV-2 virus, in maintaining to a satisfactory level vessels’ safety and in reducing the disruption of sector operation by providing flexibility, regardless of restricted border measures. Overall, it is apparent that achieving effective surveys on board a vessel is essential for maintaining high safety standards, regulatory compliance and environmental responsibility.
