The location of residence significantly influences the educational opportunities available to young individuals, impacting their exposure to new stimuli and knowledge. Specifically, young people residing in remote areas, such as isolated islands or rural villages, may not have the same opportunities as those living in urban centers. This, in turn, results in a lack of information about various study and career options and the conditions in the job market.
One proposed solution to address these challenges is connecting students with professionals from different fields to share professional advice and experiences from their daily work.
Based on the above, the purpose of this research is to explore the impact of connecting secondary education schools from remote areas in Greece, such as villages/towns/islands, with professionals of various specialties from around the world. This connection is established through the implementation of an educational program titled "The Tipping Point," which connects classes of students with professionals through technology-enabled and via live sessions.
Specifically, the research examines the impact of this connection by assessing the degree of students' awareness of academic/professional choices and the functioning of the job market through the program, as well as the recorded benefits. Additionally, the research investigates whether students from remote areas wish to be informed early about their professional/academic options and the prevailing conditions in the job market, along with the degree of necessity for such information. Simultaneously, the research explores whether discussions with professionals of different specialties, in general, constitute an effective way to inform students.
To achieve the above, a relevant survey was conducted through the creation and collection of three questionnaires targeting three different groups: Educators working in schools located in villages, towns/islands across Greece; students from Junior High Schools and High Schools in corresponding areas; and professionals from different specialties. All three groups had experience with the implementation of the "The Tipping Point" program, enabling them to share their perspectives and experiences related to the program.
