The object of study of this diploma thesis is the implementation of information systems in enterprises and more specifically the obstacles that appear during such a project and may be critical, factors that will lead to the successful or unsuccessful implementation of an information system.
The first chapters of the paper provide the theoretical background on the nature, the historical evolution, the functions and the stages of implementation of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Moreover, based on the research in the international literature, the most important obstacles that occur during an information system change project are presented and divided according to their characteristics and their type (technical, organizational, human factor, etc.). At the end of the first section of the diploma thesis, ways and methods of dealing with the most critical of the aforementioned obstacles are listed.
The second section of the diploma thesis concerns the survey which was conducted in the form of questionnaires to employees of companies in the region of Attica and aimed to identify the most critical factors that hinder them in the daily operation of information systems and the obstacles they faced during their participation in an information system implementation/change project. First, the theoretical background and the way in which this research was structured is presented. Additionally, the results are presented in detail and linked to the obstacles and ways of dealing with them, based on the literature, in order to confirm or question some of them.
According to the data collected in this diploma thesis, the tight and unrealistic schedule of projects, the insufficient training of users, the inability to harmonize the needs and processes of the company with the capabilities of the information system and the general resistance of people to change, seem to be the most important obstacles as their existence is confirmed by both the international literature and the research conducted among a sample of employees of Greek companies.
