The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the role of Renewable Energy Sources (RES), with a focus on solar and wind energy, in Greece, and to explore any potential links between them and the likelihood of energy poverty. This research is conducted within the context of the ongoing energy crisis in the country. Initially, the Greek energy market is examined, with particular attention to the role of lignite, the expansion of RES, and the National Action Plan for Energy and Climate (NPEC). The issue of energy poverty in Greece is then examined, and energy communities are evaluated as a potential solution to this challenge. Subsequently, data on the evolution of energy variables in Greece—specifically energy production and installed capacity for solar and wind energy—over the past five years are presented. These data reveal an increasing trend in total energy production and the installed capacity of wind and photovoltaic plants during the study period. This trend suggests progress toward achieving the objectives of the NPEC. Utilizing these data, statistical analysis is employed to predict the electricity output from photovoltaic and wind power systems for the following year. The analysis indicates that energy prices for both wind and photovoltaic systems are expected to decrease slightly compared to the previous year, although not significantly. Finally, the study highlights the importance of continuing the development of renewable energy sources and strengthening energy communities. These initiatives are essential for combating energy poverty, improving energy efficiency, and ensuring a sustainable and equitable energy future.
