The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the weaknesses of corporate governance that contributed to the collapse of banks during the 2008 global financial crisis, as well as to highlight strategies for avoiding a similar situation in the future. Starting from the definition of corporate governance and the problems faced by the relevant systems, the dissertation continues by highlighting the corporate governance problems emerging in financial institutions, makes a reference to the main causes of the recent financial crisis and the link between them and the weaknesses of the corporate governance system, refers to the vital improvements that need to be made to the existing corporate governance system of financial institutions, presents the existing proposals for improving the system and concludes with the conclusions, as well as the wish to avoid similar situations in the future.
