Μedia sector is diverse and creative and the environment in which these companies operate is highly competitive, as there are several equally competitive companies in the same market, operating independently and aiming to increase their profits. In recent years, however, a trend towards the concentration of media companies has been observed throughout Europe and internationally, as a result of the rapid technological development and the liberalization of the specific sector. Business models are changing as entrepreneurs try to decide whether content or presentation will dominate, and traditional media formats are evolving to fit into the new world of digital media. The internet brought rapid changes to the media market, changes that meant the decline of print sales and the dependence of entrepreneurs on advertising revenue, but also the development of new business models, such as news aggregators that act as an online gathering point for journalistic content from various media (e.g. Google News).
In this fermentation environment media companies are required to ensure satisfactory efficiency for their survival and growth and one of the strategies they can follow to achieve this is the strategy of growth through acquisitions and mergers. The concentration of companies, however, in whatever way it is carried out creates economies of scale and involves many risks. In the sensitive media sector, the stakes are high as media pluralism is inextricably linked to the diversity of sources and content and contributes to the protection of information and expression, basic manifestations of democracy.
The subject of this thesis is the study and presentation of issues related to mergers and acquisitions in the media sector and the highlighting of the contribution of the General Competition Law and the special regulations in the regulation of concentration issues in the sector in question.
