In the context of an evolving society, the need for innovative approaches to education becomes imperative. These approaches are not limited to cognitive development but also include the often overlooked field of social-emotional skills.
The following study was based on the design of a scenario based on the Design Thinking methodology and orchestrated using the creative problem-solving method within a virtual reality environment using the Gather.town platform, aimed at high school students.
This study aimed to promote empathy and creative self-confidence in secondary education by engaging students in assuming virtual roles, allowing them to experiment with various forms of self-expression. Participants had the opportunity to engage both individually and collaboratively in an online educational setting, using their personal computers or tablets.
The study involved a small sample (9) of high school students, spanning two weeks and comprising four educational interventions. Through both qualitative and quantitative data analysis, the research findings demonstrated significantly positive outcomes associated with the impact of the virtual scenario. Throughout the educational interventions, participants exhibited increased interest in developing levels of empathy and creative self-confidence.
These findings can offer guidelines for educators and policymakers interested in integrating virtual reality into the educational community to cultivate socio-emotional skills.
