In the present thesis, the insurance coverage for the transportation of hazardous goods by sea is examined and developed. This is preceded by an analysis of the fundamental pillars of maritime insurance, the legislative framework governing it under both Greek and international law, and the regime of liability and compensation in the event of a maritime accident. In this context, special attention is given to the categorization of hazardous goods based on their level of danger, as defined in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, which essentially regulates the transport of hazardous materials, including their stowage, loading, labeling, and storage procedures, ensuring their safe transport while protecting both the marine environment and human safety.
The data was primarily gathered from foreign-language literature, legal texts on maritime law, case law from European courts, publications from the International Maritime Organization, and relevant scholarly articles.
