This master's thesis explores the effective management of school anxiety in secondary school students through the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). School anxiety is a widespread problem that negatively affects students' academic performance and mental health, leading to serious consequences such as depression and school refusal. CBT is a scientifically proven psychotherapeutic method that has been shown to be particularly effective in reducing anxiety, helping students recognize and restructure their negative thoughts.
Recognizing the advantages of online interventions in addressing school anxiety, such as the flexibility, accessibility, and potential for personalization offered by digital platforms, this thesis proposes the creation of an e-Course as an innovative intervention tool. The e-Course will incorporate the basic principles of CBT, such as the identification and modification of dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors, the development of coping skills, and the promotion of self-awareness. Through interactive activities, educational videos, and self-assessment exercises, students will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to manage their anxiety effectively.
The research accompanying the e-course focuses on evaluating its effectiveness in understanding and managing school anxiety. Due to limitations in the current study, the e-course was not implemented with a student population. Instead, expert psychologists evaluated the educational scenario and CBT techniques incorporated in the e-course. Their feedback highlighted the potential effectiveness of the e-course, while also suggesting areas for improvement, particularly in the self-assessment module.
The thesis concludes by discussing the implications of the findings and proposing future research directions. The development of this e-course represents an innovative approach to addressing school anxiety, and the positive evaluation by experts suggests its potential for helping students manage their anxiety. Further research, including a pilot implementation with students, is necessary to confirm these initial findings and refine the e-course for optimal effectiveness.
