This thesis is about the design, development, and evaluation of an e-course for the development of computational thinking through 2nd grade equations for high school students. More specifically, a course was designed in the form of a digital escape room that is educationally supported by artificial intelligence tools and based on the application of the MCIEC model. Through the escape room "Find Mr. X" students are invited to explore knowledge and relate it to real-life examples. They search for clues, solve problems and puzzles, work together following the strategies Jiqsaw, brainstorming and think pair share, discover the hidden password, and find Mr X.
The study focuses on investigating the effectiveness of the digital escape room, "Find Mr X" in developing students' computational thinking through mathematics related to 2nd grade equations in secondary school (3rd grade). It also explores how artificial intelligence (AI) tools support students' learning processes. The study is based on a sample of 30 subjects, the majority of whom are teachers and postgraduate students, who evaluated their learning experience through a structured questionnaire. The main research questions examine to what extent students develop computational thinking skills - such as problem decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction and algorithmic problem solving - during their engagement with the digital escape room. In addition, the research explores the perceived impact of the escape room and AI tools on students' mathematical understanding and problem-solving abilities in 2nd order equations.
Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed on the data using SPSS software. Results indicate that participants perceived significant growth in students' abilities to apply algorithmic solutions and generalize abstract mathematical concepts through the escape room. Most respondents also highlighted the role of AI tools in enhancing students' comprehension and analytical skills. The findings suggest that digital escape rooms, combined with the use of AI tools, can be an effective pedagogical strategy for developing computational thinking and improving students' mathematical skills. As a future research direction, it is proposed to conduct a study with high school students to compare the effectiveness of e-course versus a traditional mode of instruction.
