The present thesis focuses on the design, development, and evaluation of an online
distance learning course for secondary education teachers. The e-course aims to help
participants discover and utilize digital tools in teaching, tackle challenges, and
incorporate innovative methods to offer an enhanced educational experience. It is based
on the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and includes gamification elements to increase
learner motivation.
Through the myth of Prometheus, participants are invited to reflect on whether
traditional teaching practices are sufficient in today’s world and to adopt modern digital
tools and approaches. They will work individually and in groups, applying collaborative
strategies such as brainstorming and think-pair-share.
The evaluation of the e-course’s effectiveness will be conducted using a rubric, and the
analysis of the results will be carried out by educators with postgraduate qualifications.
This study contributes to the creation of a framework that combines Self-Determination
Theory with gamification elements, promoting autonomy, competence, and relatedness ,
three key dimensions of SDT. This framework enhances learners' active participation and
intrinsic motivation, while the gamification elements create an interactive and engaging
learning environment.
Overall, the research provides valuable insights into the application of SDT and
gamification in distance education, helping teachers meet the demands of modern
teaching.
