Proper waste management in hotels is a critical component of sustainable tourism. As the global hospitality industry continues to grow, the environmental impact of hotels is becoming increasingly important. This paper highlights the importance of adopting effective waste management practices in hotels to mitigate environmental impacts.
This study explores various aspects of waste management in hotels, including waste generation, segregation, disposal and recycling. It highlights the need for hotels to adopt integrated waste reduction strategies and to comply with the current legal framework at national and European level.
The main tool of the paper is the case study of the five-star hotel in Crete. The hotel has all inclusive facilities which means that it caters for many needs for the guests and at the same time has many sources of waste generation. An important step is to record the quantities generated per stream in order to understand the current situation. This will enable the proposal of solutions to improve the integrated waste management within the facility.
