Both active and passive smoking have serious effects on a person's health. On the one hand, active smoking is associated with an increased risk of lung, larynx, mouth and pancreas cancer. It also contributes to chronic lung diseases such as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and worsens cardiovascular disease, leading to heart disease and stroke. On the other hand, passive smoking is just as dangerous. Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke are exposed to the same risks as active smokers, with an increased risk of cancer, pneumonia, breathing problems and cardiovascular disease. Particularly sensitive groups, such as children and pregnant women, are at increased risk for health problems, as their bodies are still developing. These effects demonstrate the importance of information, prevention and support for smoking cessation in order to ensure health protection and improve quality of life. Smoking, in addition to being an addictive habit, is emerging as a serious risk factor for public health. Tobacco contains hundreds of toxic substances and carcinogenic compounds that have a negative effect on every organism. Indeed, the fight against smoking is emerging as a central priority for public health, both in Europe and in Greece. The efforts made by governments, the EU and the Greek government reflect a continuous path towards reducing smoking and promoting healthy lifestyles. Comprehensive legislation, tax policies, and educational campaigns are important tools that help protect the community from the harmful effects of smoking. This work aims to investigate the effects of smoking (active-passive) on the individual's health, the effect of smoking on society, the reasons why people are pushed to smoke (characteristics of smokers, social environment, etc.) and what policies (national-European) have been implemented to reduce smoking. For the needs of our research, some statistical data on smoking in Greece and abroad will also be presented.
