Abstract

Email, as a cornerstone of digital communication, has witnessed a remarkable evolution since its inception. This thesis presents a historical overview of email, tracing its origins from early networked messaging systems to its widespread adoption, while exploring key milestones, technological advancements, and paradigm shifts that have shaped the evolution of email environments over time. Building upon this historical foundation, the multifaceted nature of the primary challenges faced by email environments in the contemporary digital landscape are being examined, along with their implications for users and organizations. In response to these challenges, the latest developments and innovations in email environments are being explored, focusing on emerging technologies, trends, and best practices that are reshaping the future of email communication, in areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and natural language processing, as well as their potential applications for improving email efficiency and personalization for end users. It analyzes key features, user interface design trends, accessibility enhancements, and usability improvements implemented by leading email providers to enhance the user experience and meet the evolving needs of modern email users, focusing on web-based email services, desktop clients, mobile apps, and integrated communication suites. Overall, the thesis reflects on the dynamic nature of email environments, characterized by a rich history, persistent challenges, and ongoing innovations, while emphasizing that by addressing the identified challenges and leveraging the latest developments, they can continue to serve as effective and accessible communication platforms in an increasingly interconnected and “smart” world.
