This thesis provides a comprehensive economic assessment of the photovoltaic (PV) industry in Greece, focusing on the interplay between market dynamics, regulatory frameworks, and technological advancements. The study explores key economic dynamics relevant to the PV sector, including increasing returns to scale, natural monopoly characteristics, and the impact of profit expectations and uncertainty on investments. It also examines the legal and economic structure of the Greek electricity and PV markets. Special attention is given to policy dilemmas in auction design, grid congestion, and measures for grid congestion mitigation. Recent efforts by the Greek government to incentivize solar plants and prioritize grid connections are also discussed. The thesis further delves into the optimal choice between large-scale and distributed generation, the role of batteries and energy storage, and the potential for solar energy exports. The findings underscore the importance of strategic investments in grid infrastructure and energy storage to enhance market efficiency and support the sustainable growth of the PV industry in Greece. The study concludes with environmental, social and SME considerations and recommendations for managers, policymakers and stakeholders.
