Abstract
The maritime profession has many similarities with modern working life, but it also
presents unique challenges. One important differentiating factor is that seafarers can
spend up to 12 months continuously on board a ship, which is their place of work, living
and recreation. Working on board involves many stressors that can negatively impact
critical safety functions, productivity and long-term retention. The occupational health,
safety and welfare of seafarers depend on a number of interdependent factors at micro,
medium and macro levels.
In this research, we tried to identify and analyse the factors that affect the well-being of
seafarers in order to develop appropriate preventive strategies and promotional
measures. We propose strategies and measures starting from the individual seafarer and
extending to the entire shipping industry. Developing confidence in the crew is
important as it enables workers to recognise and deal effectively with problematic
situations. To bridge the gap between policy and practice, the legislative framework
needs to be translated into practical procedures that are understood and implemented
by middle managers in the shipping business, who are at the forefront edge and often
operate with limited resources and time for decision-making.
