Abstract
Sustainability in shipping is a composite issue that requires careful approach on economic, social, and environmental levels. In terms of economic sustainability, the use of green technologies and cost-benefit analysis are fundamental elements. Specifically, social responsibility is expressed through initiatives that promote the education of human resources towards the path of green development. On the environmental level, strategies are implemented for the effective diminution of emissions, research into alternative energy sources and the protection of marine areas from waste. Additionally, marine pollution and the impacts of climate change require instant attention to maintain sustainability in shipping. Overall, the analysis reveals the multifaceted nature of the environmental challenges concerning shipping and climate change. The increase in greenhouse gas emissions and the long-term impacts of climate change raise concerns for the future of the planet and its ecosystems. Furthermore, the espousal of green practices and investment in innovative technologies contribute to reducing the human and environmental footprint. The role and notion of sustainability in the shipping field were defined as an entry point, following international standards and literature, with the promotion of sustainability as the central subject of the work, creating an assessment model for the social sustainability of big corporations. As a result, sustainability in shipping requires a comprehensive approach at multiple levels and continuous action to address environmental challenges and maintain balance with the environment.
