“The "Sustainable Blue Economy", an interlinked concept with the Green Deal, is a key EU strategy for the long-term support of the maritime and shipping sector. It aims at sustainable use of marine resources and economic progress while protecting and preserving the marine environment. Through the Green Deal, it seeks to ensure a smooth transition of Europe to a climate-neutral continent by 2050.
The aim of this Diploma Thesis is to comparatively study the level of "Sustainable Blue Economy" of the five largest ports at global and national level. The main evaluation criteria are defined as economic, social and environmental sustainability.
In conclusion, the most profitable ports in America, Asia and Europe have not complied satisfactorily with the "Blue Growth" policy. This is also the case for the top five Greek ports, which account for 60% of the economic value of all domestic ports. It is therefore imperative that they shift towards sustainability.
