The subject of this postgraduate thesis is energy conservation in residential buildings. At the
beginning, a brief presentation is made on the phenomenon of the greenhouse effect, the risks
associated with it, and the need to address it, with energy conservation being one of the key
solutions. Subsequently, a concise reference is made to the European and national
institutional interventions that promote and focus on energy conservation.
Subsequently, an assessment is conducted on the improvement of energy efficiency and
energy conservation as a measure, following the analysis of the current state of the building
stock in Greece and the prospects it presents.
Next, new technologies for improving energy efficiency are presented, followed by the
passive building standard, aiming for maximum/optimal energy conservation. This goal is
now fully aligned with the modern requirements of sustainability, which must and should be
applied in every action, both in the energy upgrade of existing buildings and in the
construction of new ones.
Finally, two buildings are examined under three energy upgrade scenarios (1st Exoikonomo
Program, 2nd upgrade according to K.En.A.K. to at least A class, and 3rd upgrade based on
the passive building standard), the results of which are then evaluated.
Τhe thesis concludes with an overall assessment, taking into account the current situation in
Greece, the existing prospects, and the problems that need to be addressed in order to
maximize the benefits that can arise from energy conservation.
