The aim of this master thesis is, on the one hand, to record and present the
disciplinary offences, to which the Greek seamen/women fall during the exercise of
the maritime profession (depending on their rank, duties, etc.), as well as the
disciplinary treatment they receive from the First Degree Disciplinary Board of the
Merchant Navy, i.e. the recognition or not of disciplinary responsibility and the
disciplinary penalties imposed on them, on the other hand, the comparison of the
recorded data and the drawing of conclusions not only in terms of the aforementioned
data, but also in terms of a series of issues, such as the speed with which disciplinary
justice is administered, the role of the defense attorney, etc. To fulfill this purpose, the
method of statistical research on the already issued disciplinary decisions in the years
2017 to 2019 was chosen and the use of (comparative) charts. The choice of this time
period was influenced by the fact that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the
adjudication of disciplinary cases slowed down extremely during the years 2020-
2022, with the result that the majority of the cases identified for adjudication during
these years will take place within the year 2023.
