Abstract
Purpose: This master thesis aims to study the deployment of the ARTutor, an Augmented Reality (AR) application, in the context of preschool education, and in particular the possible effect on the level of their engagement in the learning process, as evaluated by a selected group of teachers.
Methodology: In this context, an AR enhanced educational scenario was designed, based on the use of the ARTutor, on the subject of marine life and water pollution, including activities related with the benefits of recycling and recyclable materials. Through a mixed methodological approach, the opinion of preschool teachers was captured regarding the possible influence of the proposed AR enhanced educational scenario on the levels of engagement of the students of the specific age group.
Results: A total of 9 preschool teachers participated in the study, with an appropriately structured questionnaire and a short structured interview. Based on the findings of this study, the majority of the participating teachers (66.66%) consider that the inclusion of Augmented Reality can contribute to the increase of students' engagement. Similarly, the investigation of the influence of the use of Augmented Reality in enhancing all three types of student engagement, or only some of them, revealed that 8 out of 9 teachers believe that it contributes to the cultivation of "Collaboration", with 6 out of 9 teachers focusing on the development of "Memory" and 5 out of 9 teachers arguing that through the teaching script the students' "Enthusiasm" is enhanced. At the same time, 5 of the 9 teachers who participated in the investigation were comfortable with the design of the educational scenario, whereas, 3 teachers suggested reducing the volume of activities or the degree of utilization of digital technology (augmented reality).
