In modern times, higher education is seen as one of the key tools for
personal, social and economic development of an individual. Therefore,
continuous improvement and renewal of its structure, programmes and
methodologies is essential. Modifications in the field of higher education
are an attempt to adapt to the new social, technological and economic
challenges that are emerging. This thesis aims to conceptualize the reforms
that are being implemented across the board for further apprehension. By
analysing the factors that determine them, an attempt is made to investigate
the parameters that contribute to their effectiveness. This retrospect
presents the main reforms in the field of Higher Education since the
establishment of the modern Greek state. Through the research conducted, a
trial is made to identify the driving forces behind them, their objectives,
the results achieved so far and their potential impact on the quality of
Higher Education. Special mention is made to the establishment of private
universities with intriguing results. Finally, the pursuance of practices
that will contribute to the effective implementation and realization of
reforms in Higher Education is suggested.
