Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are a vital component of the Greek economy, representing more than 99% of enterprises in the country. This thesis examines the definition, characteristics, importance, challenges, opportunities and policies and programmes to support SMEs in Greece. The findings show that SMEs in Greece face many challenges, including limited access to funding, high taxes and social security contributions, complex regulations and a lack of skilled workforce. However, there are opportunities at their disposal, including access to EU funding, a growing startup ecosystem, a focus on innovation and technology, and a growing demand for high-quality, locally produced goods and services. The Greek government has implemented various policies and programmes to support SMEs, including financial support, training and networking opportunities. The study concludes that SMEs are critical to the Greek economy, contributing to job creation, economic growth and regional development. Supporting their growth and innovation is essential for the country's economic recovery, and SMEs can thrive on the global market by taking advantage of their available opportunities and state support programmes.
