The aim of the current thesis was to examine the relationship between pharmaceutical expenditure and life expectancy for people over 65 years old during the last 10 years. The analysis focused on developed economies, in particular those of the EU, UK, US and Japan. Only secondary data collected from the OECD database and covering the period 2011-2021 were used. The results of the survey showed that, in general, pharmaceutical expenditure has a positive impact on life expectancy. However, the effective functioning of the welfare state and public health expenditure seems to have a significant impact on this relationship since in countries with developed and efficient health systems pharmaceutical expenditure was indeed effectively used to improve life expectancy levels in people over 65. The analysis therefore highlights the multiple parameters that influence the functioning of health care and the relationship between the economy and health.
