Smart City. A term we hear all the time. All efforts in the OTAs in recent years on the basis of their transformation refer to this term. But what is «Smart City,» what is the ecosystem of the Smart City, what is what the Smart City offers to the citizen and in their daily life, in their work as a smart citizen.
Due to my involvement for many years with Local Government from a position of responsibility and specifically in the Municipality of Athens, which is the largest in the country, this thesis presents some examples of implementation of the urban vision of the Smart City. The utilization of modern innovative technological solutions that invest in participatory intergovernmentalism, always focusing on the citizen, in order to implement policies and services aiming at sustainable development, quality of life and social cohesion is the aim. It is a difficult task that can only be achieved with a clear strategy and policies that are citizen- and city-centred. And of course based on the specificities of each case.
As I mentioned earlier, the aim of the diploma is to present some examples of cities on a global scale, so that we can better understand what we call a smart sustainable city.
The Municipality of Athens has in recent years presented its Strategic Plan for Climate as well as consulted on its Digital Paper which analyses its Digital Strategy for the coming years. It also participates in the EU action for climate neutral cities.
This thesis presents good practices and examples of smart cities at service level, covering some categories such as mobility, environment, economy, living governance etc.
