In this study, I examine the relationship between the environmental and social performance of countries and the companies operating in them. The research starts with a review of the risks, costs, and opportunities for companies with good environmental and social performance. I point out the measurement problem of the ESG, dividing it into two parts, what we need to measure and the weaknesses in the definition and measurement of the ESG. The presentation of the relationship between ESG ratings and a firm’s financial performance completes the literature review. Using a sample of 301 firms during the period from 2001 to 2021. I find that ESG components are negatively related to GINI and CO2 index. The same result was obtained in some trend of the coefficients of the time dummy variables.
