This study examines the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria
into the investment decisions of shipping companies and explores their role in promoting
sustainable business practices within the industry. The shipping sector, a major contributor to
global trade and economic growth, is facing increasing pressure to address environmental and
social challenges while maintaining financial viability. Through an extensive literature
review, case studies, and empirical analysis, this research aims to understand the importance
of ESG factors in shaping investment decisions and their impact on the performance and
long-term resilience of shipping companies.
The results of this study show that the incorporation of ESG principles into investment
decisions is critical to risk management, competitive advantage, and overall sustainability in
the shipping industry. In addition, the study highlights the need for a standardized ESG
reporting framework to facilitate transparency and comparability among industry players. By
adopting ESG criteria, shipping companies can improve their decision-making, attract
sustainable investments, and contribute to a more environmentally and socially responsible
industry.
