Abstract
The esports industry in Greece is growing at a significantly slower pace than in the rest of Europe. This study aims to shed light on the factors that hinder the development of esports in Greece, while simultaneously identifying the advantages that can give a new impetus to the expansion of this sector. The aim of this study was to create - for the first time - a bibliography (at a theoretical level) for the field of esports in Greece. The bibliography is supplemented with the findings of the research, which aims to initiate a more substantial and deeper study of the field in Greece. Quantitative methods were used to collect the study data. An anonymous electronic questionnaire was created and distributed to the Greek esports community using a simple random sampling method. The final sample was composed of 570 respondents. Following the completion of data collection and analysis, important findings emerged as regards both structural problems and future opportunities of esports. This process led to a series of important conclusions regarding the growth potential of the esports industry in Greece. These conclusions, presented in the last section of this paper, are offered as a starting point for discussion regarding the initiatives that can contribute to the expansion of the Greek professional esports landscape.
