«Technological innovation usually results from the search for conditions to improve costs and efficiency, the attempt to respond to current or projected societal expectations, or the need to adapt to available resources» (Theotokas,2011). Technological change in shipping depends on several endogenous and exogenous factors which pose opportunities and threats. Every shipping company in order to survive in this constantly changing environment tries to keep up with the technological developments, innovative applications and availability of technology services (Frankel,1991). Thus, all departments of a shipping company should be able to take advantage of new technologies in order to respond to new data. The initiation of adaptation and coordination of all departments to follow a common technological development in the company starts with the human resources department.
The purpose of this paper is to critically analyze the new possibilities through the application of digitization to the human resources of shipping companies and to highlight the benefits that arise in their business activities as well as the perspectives that are open to them for the transition to a new era characterized by the innovations of "smart" shipping. The exploitation of technological means by maritime enterprises and the role of digital transition are proving to be decisive factors in the upgrading of HR functions and the other departments, and their effectiveness and efficiency are reflected in the modern shipping industry.
