Nowadays, information and communication technologies (ICT) are developing in a rapid way so that it is necessary to integrate them in the implementation of all applications. Although people of younger ages come to terms with the ever-evolving technological means more quickly, all age groups now use smartphones because they can offer unique and distinct experiences. Mobile phone applications, digital media and virtual reality with the passage of time show more and more penetration in our daily life, they are constantly developing and can provide a solution to many problems or requirements of the contemporary lifestyle.
In the field of culture, digital content can be provided in various ways (e.g. through virtual reality, digital collections, exhibitions, etc.). During a digital visit, visitors can see images of museum exhibits and objects, read descriptions and background information about them, and even watch videos or listen to recordings. Some digital museum experiences also offer interactive elements, such as virtual tours or quizzes, to enhance the visit.
People, especially younger people, are now more familiar with modern technological means. This consequently motivates cultural organizations to invest in the implementation of new methods of displaying digital content via the Internet. The truth is that since the pandemic of 2020 and after, more and more museums resorted to this solution, with the result that many large museums have online content. However, regardless of the pandemic, online museum visits are proving to be a great way for people to experience a museum from anywhere, even from their home. They are also a useful tool for people with mobility problems or disabilities who may find it difficult to visit the museum in its physical space.
In this thesis we will study how digital media and the internet have contributed to the better and greater dissemination of culture in the world. We will analyze how the corresponding technology is used and describe some of the most well-known corresponding examples.
Finally, we will describe the relevant project that we implemented to cover the needs for the search and exploration of museums that provide digital content (e.g. digital exhibits, tours, etc.) through mobile phone applications. The description will include information on how the proposed application works and is used, how it was implemented and the resources used.
