This dissertation is about the class societies’ demands, the dry dock’s line of work and it is mainly based on literature review. This paper focuses on the examination of the level on which the line of work of a dry dock is in accordance with the requirements and the demands set by the classification society. At first, there is a historical overview on the class societies and their profession, followed by a detailed description of the routine inspections as well as the demands each inspection entails. Then, there is a description of the shipyards and the kinds of docks they have in order to welcome the ships not only for the classification society’s routine inspections but for any reparations as well. The next two chapters (4 & 5) are dedicated to the preparations that should be done both by the shipping company and the ship’s crew in order for the vessel to be well prepared for its dry docking. In addition, some of the most basic/crucial /standard tasks that are needed to be done in a dry dock are mentioned. Lastly, the data of the dry docking of three different ships (kind of ship and age) is being examined in order to check on the one hand, whether the instructions of the class society were followed, and on the other, if proper maintenance work was executed for the ship, during the drydock, to be seaworthy.
