This thesis examines the environmental impacts of shipping activity during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, the role of shipping in the global economy and in the domestic economy of Greece is analysed. In addition, an extensive report is made on the environmental effects of the gaseous pollutants produced by shipping. The second part of the work is based on the mapping of the environmental regulations that govern the market and which have been established by international organizations (see, IMO, EU) regarding the need to reduce environmental pollution from shipping. Then, the evolution of the production of GHG emissions during the pandemic period is examined and reference is made to scientific findings that highlight the reasons for the reduction of air emissions in this particular period. The fourth part of the paper is based on unveiling the future approaches that the market seems to be taking to mitigate the pollution problem and analyzes the emerging practices to deal with shipping pollution.
