Both the natural and the built environment are key environmental factors affecting human health and well-being. Cities and urban areas in general are the main place where this influential relationship takes place. The fact that today 56% of the world's population lives in cities makes the study of this relationship a high priority issue.
Strong local leadership has been recognized as a key prerequisite for putting health high on the social and political agenda of cities. Cities, as the tier closest to residents, have the first say in taking initiatives to change planning patterns so that the effects of urban design on environmental parameters affecting the health of residents are taken into serious consideration.
Research in this area has started in recent years in the international community, while, in Greece, only fragmentary actions are being implemented, especially in local government. This thesis will try and respond to the challenge of reconnecting planning and public health, especially at the local level.
The proposed thesis aspires to shed light on yet another field through research in municipalities in Greece, to provide evidence and to contribute, to whatever extent possible, to the formulation of the framework for coupling urban planning and public health at the local level, which still remains unclear.
Proposals both to local government and to any stakeholder linking urban planning interventions to improve public health will emerge in a final stage and will be forwarded to the scientific community and local government stakeholders._
