My professional path to date in the Pharmaceutical industry has shown me how important Innovation is for the sustainability of a business and how it can be a driver of growth for businesses. By the term innovation, we do not mean only that which concerns the important topic of Research and Development of new and innovative products, but also Business Process Innovation which concerns the processes that run through a business or otherwise an organization. It is precisely this type of Business Process Innovation that I choose to deal with and analyze in this thesis because I believe that it is equally important, as the innovation that concerns the Research and Development of new and innovative products, as one feeds the other and vice versa and finally both types together contribute to the profitability of growth and ultimately to the sustainability of a business in perpetuity. First we will approach the definition of innovation, its types and its evolution. We will see how innovation is connected to entrepreneurship, how it is adopted at the administrative level, from the top of the administrative pyramid of a company to its base, at the resource level and what the benefit is for the sustainable development of a company. We will then focus on the Pharmaceutical industry, assessing its size and contribution both to the international economic environment and to the Eurozone environment, but also to Greece in particular. We will analyze the European innovation ecosystem, the initiatives developed within it by the European institutions and the innovation performance of the member states and Greece. Finally, a case study of the pharmaceutical company CHIESI, which operates in Greece, will follow. The primary endpoint is to see if Business Process Innovation is implemented in the business, how, what it means and what the benefit is to the business. This work is based on secondary research, with sources from the Greek and foreign literature, articles and websites.
