Abstract
The purpose of this preliminary case study is to investigate the function of performance
appraisal in a specific hotel. The research was conducted in Costa Navarino tourist resort,
which is a luxury hotel in the area of Messinia, and its main objective is to examine how the HR
department manages to evaluate their employees. The main findings show that selecting
suitable candidates results in increased productivity, system efficiency and employee
satisfaction increase.
This thesis is separated into two basic parts, analyzed in nine chapters. The first part is
the theoretical analysis, and the second one is the research that has been conducted. The first’s
part chapters are a literature review on the HR Management in the hotel industry, such as the
importance and the duties of the department, the recruitment processes, the selection, and the
constant training of the employees, etc. The eighth chapter combines the theoretical and
practical analysis in the Costa Navarino resort case, from the HR management perspective and
the staff appraisal system. The research was conducted with the help of the HR Manager, the
Head Receptionist, and the Head of the Maintenance department of the Resort, to allow us to
have a more clear and unbiased view of the appraisal system. The last chapter is the conclusion
of the research, mentioning all the limitations the research faced, and closes with suggestions
for future research that will help the Greek hotel industry to further development.
