The present master thesis entitled "The Integration of the Objectives of Sustainable Development in Local Government" was prepared during the attendance of the postgraduate program of 2019 “Bioeconomy, Sustainable Development and Circular Economy” held by the Economics Department of the University of Piraeus.
The issue addresses the importance of adopting and localizing the UN Sustainable Development Goals in local communities for their most effective implementation and achievement worldwide.
The work takes a look back at the events that led modern society to turn to sustainable development until 2015 when world leaders unanimously approved the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The corresponding European course and actions are also presented.
The importance of cities is emphasized given the increased urbanization that continues to take place and the actions of the global and European community for the right living conditions in modern settlements and their connection with Sustainable Development. At the same time, the special role of the local governments and the organizations that have been created in order to promote the Agenda 2030 is presented.
The importance of each of the SDGs for the local governments is pointed out, as well as the importance of their integration which is proved by the several "road maps" published by recognized institutions in the direction of the process for the publication of the respective Voluntary Local Reviews.
There are presented the characteristics of the Voluntary Reviews of four European municipalities Barcelona, Bonn, Helsinki and Skiathos that are published in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).
At the end, conclusions are drawn regarding the importance of integrating SDGs for local communities, the adoption of guidelines in the process of conducting VLRs and its capture process, the presentation of innovative European cities that have published VLRs in UNDESA and their features, their differences, and similarities and also the proposals for further investigation regarding the process of integration of SDGs in the Greek Municipalities.
