Abstract

Worldwide, the educational levels are staffed by a majority of women for the need of teaching. However, while women predominate in classrooms, this does not also happen with their participation in the educational administration. This study attempts to investigate the views of teachers who work in primary and secondary school units, on the presence of the female gender in the educational administrative hierarchy. The research participants are 132 active teachers from various regions of Greece. The purpose of the research is to examined the views of the participating teachers regarding the role of gender in the administration of school units and its impact on effective administration. Also to examine the existence of gender discrimination in both public and private education and finally, to seek the motivations and factors that enhance but also those that prevent male and female teachers from claiming and assuming school leadership in order to highlight similarities and differences in the motivations of both of them for taking over a managerial position. According to the findings of this research, the teachers believe that gender discrimination dominates in Greek education and particularly in private educational sector where a woman may encounter low opportunities and even a salary gap. However, the majority of teachers stated that they have no preference for the gender of the head of the school. Finally, women have career ambitions and are interested in developing and taking on managerial roles in education, therefore a series of policies and actions are necessary to be implement in this direction.
