Port activities have both positive and negative impacts on the urban environment. The positive effects are mainly related to economic benefits, while the negative ones are mainly related to environmental issues, land use issues and traffic congestion. In the present work, a cross-sectional research was carried out in order to investigate the effects of port activities on the urban environment in Greece, using the Municipality of Lavreotiki as a case study. Primary data were collected with a structured questionnaire from a sample of 101 people living mainly in the city of Lavrio, a port area.. Data were statistically analyzed using SPSS. The results showed that the urban environment is not significantly affected by port activities, according to the perception of those who replied to the questionnaire. The main positive effects concern economic benefits and urban activity. The negative effects mainly concern traffic congestion, as well as problems with garbage and waste, while, in principle there are no actions to reduce the negative effects. The quality of life of the urban population tends to be good. The existence of abandoned port facilities is a problem for the lives of the inhabitants, as it implies a reduced perceived quality of life, degradation of aesthetics and limitation of the potential for establishment of new business activity.
