The implementation of insects as alternative sources of protein in both human and animal diet as well as the prospects arising from this use, is the main topic of the dissertation thesis. The first part mainly presents data and information related to the use of insects in human nutrition. Continuously, their use as an alternative source of protein in animal feed is presented and analyzed. In particular, evidence from studies regarding energy utilization and energy efficiency resulting from the production of insect-based animal feed is demonstrated. This part is highly associated with the climate crisis and aims to prove through the results of studies that the use of insect-based feed has a lighter environmental footprint compared to the conventional animal feed. Finally, a case study from the literature is presented, where insects were used as a source of protein in animal feed, resulting in excellent outcomes.
