The Kosovo war and NATO’s intervention in 1999, have been major issues especially
for the broader Balkan area, which suffered a disturbance of balance and stability, as
well as its surrounding nations. For this reason, the cause of this war and the
intervention itself has been subjects of great interest for further analysis.
The humanitarian response was deemed necessary to end the war and to prevent the
involved states, as well as Europe, from being afflicted further from the negative
consequences of the conflict.
The historical facts, from the period of Tito and thereafter, are considered to be a
precursor to the hostilities between Kosovo and Serbia. The bibliographic research
analyses the differences between the notion of war and intervention in a broader
context, while more specifically, Serbia, Kosovo and NATO’s strategies are being
explored before and after the bombing incursions that took place.
Following the reasoning behind NATO’s humanitarian intervention presented, the
conditions, as determined by the United Nations, under which a humanitarian response
can take place, are also mentioned as well as their role in such a response. Finally, the
legal framework of the principles of self-determination and self-defence of nations are
properly examined.
However, it must be noted that the main objective of NATO’s intervention was
accomplished, and the war ended, even if NATO’s decision to interfere had not been
approved by the Security Council, as is the formal due process prescribed by the United
Nations.
