Maritime accidents may have decreased compared to the past, but that does not mean that they have been eliminated or that the consequences are negligible. Especially if we look at the accidents involving tankers we will see that the effects on the marine environment are particularly adverse and catastrophic.
The purpose of this dissertation is to present the existing regulatory framework, conventions and organizations that exist to control and prevent tanker accidents and the marine pollution they cause. To this end, some well-known and particularly harmful to the marine environment maritime accidents will be listed and how they have affected maritime safety and regulations worldwide.
Prior to the above, the evolution and role of tankers in global shipping will be briefly presented, as well as the types of marine pollution with particular emphasis on pollution caused by oil spills following maritime accidents.
Finally, the evolution of international conventions and regulations over the years will be presented as well as the current situation will be assessed and it will be examined what additional measures can be taken to prevent similar accidents in the future and especially the negative environmental impact from them.
