The European countries apply a variety of procedures and make their own political and social choices according to their health interests. As there are differences in the level of implementation of health expenditure, organization, and financing of healthcare systems, they operate within a common framework of values, (the provision of quality health services, solidarity and equal access to the use of health products and services). However, these common values are usually severely tested on the altar of measures to cope with global and domestic economic crises.
The thesis focuses on a theoretical study of health care expenditure and healthcare systems in general for the countries of the European Union and particularly for three European island states (United Kingdom, Cyprus, and Ireland), which are characterized by the same healthcare system model (Beveridge Model). An empirical study is then carried out, in which an attempt is made to investigate the statistical relation between public health expenditure and other macroeconomic variables, using regression analysis methodology, for the European island states. The aim is to capture the reality of health expenditure for the countries under study as well as possible on a theoretical and research level.
