The shipbuilding industry is one of the hardest and most complex, high capital business sectors the world over which requires a good many years of investment in both infrastructure and expertise. The deciding factors which defined how this paper is drawn up, its compilation and structure, were the booming market in the sale, recovery and restoration of the major shipyards of the country as well as the forthcoming implementation of the new regulations concerning environmental protection alongside with the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The present paper begins with a brief overview of the history and development of shipbuilding worldwide and the principal factors affecting it. The paper then continues with IMO's new regulatory framework on environmental protection and the way it affects global shipping as far as both time and technology are concerned in order that the tight timeframes set as well as the promptness with which the necessary actions should be conducted can be effectively understood; shipyards are the centrepiece, either in building new ships or through repurposing existing ones, their restoration, maintenance and modernization. Furthermore, there are references to the current situation and the latest developments in the main basic shipbuilding facilities and infrastructure of the country, followed by a SWOT analysis of the shipbuilding industry in Greece. In conclusion, in view of the further development and evolution of the industry in our country, its prospects are analyzed and proposals are made highlighting its importance not only in modern shipping but also in the Greek economy.
